Dramatic pictures show scale of lorry fire that left M4 motorway strewn with wine bottles

Dramatic pictures have emerged after a lorry carrying hundreds of bottles of wine caught fire on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.

The M4 westbound has been closed since around 3.18pm on Wednesday from J21 (M48 Severn Bridge – England Side) to J23 (M48 Severn Bridge – Wales Side) due to a lorry fire which has been extinguished

Traffic monitoring service Inrix posted at 4.45pm: “Congestion to J19 M32 (Bristol) and also on the M49 approach. The opposite side of the Prince of Wales Bridge is busy as traffic slows to look at the fire. The fire has now been extinguished and the lorries contents are being checked over. Road remains shut after a lorry caught fire earlier halfway across the Prince of Wales bridge heading into Wales.”

A diversion is in place via the M48 Severn Bridge where there are already queues for roadworks and delays are “getting worse” according to Inrix. Scroll down to see pictures of the fire and you can follow our live updates here.
