A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson today confirmed an arrest had been made after the crash near Maisemore. They said: “A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while under the influence of drugs
“He remains in police custody today, Thursday 23 June. Two people involved in the collision were taken to hospital last night to be checked over. ” The spokesman said the man who died in he collision was aged in his 50s.
The closure of a section of one of the busiest routes led to jams on other roads in the area during the morning rush hour. Initially it was thought that the road would only be closed this morning.
But now police say the A417 could be still closed between Maisemore and the A40 Over roundabout when commuters travel back tonight.
The spokesman added: “It’s expected that the road will remain closed for several more hours and therefore motorists are advised to plan ahead for their journeys home from work later.”
This morning National Highways tweeted about the problems caused by the closure. “Long delays on the #A40 eastbound between Churcham and the Over Roundabout at #Gloucester (and #A48 north from Minsterworth to #Highnam) in #Gloucestershire due to a serious collision closing the #A417 north from the roundabout towards Maisemore being dealt with by @Glos_Police.”
