Matlock fire: Firefighters battle football-pitch sized blaze next to Derbyshire golf course

Fire crews from across Derbyshire have been deployed to a fire in woodland near Matlock Golf Club. Residents in the area have been advised to keep windows and doors closed.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service told Derbyshire Live that the blaze was first reported at 1.40pm this afternoon (June 22) near the 11th tee of Matlock Golf Course on Sandy Lane. Crews from Matlock, Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Glossop and Buxton are currently fighting the fire.

Early reports from the fire service suggest the blaze covers an area of ​​150 meters by 50 meters – roughly the size of a football pitch. A specialist Unimog argocat (all-terrain vehicle) and water carrier are being used at the scene.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “Please be advised that we have a large fire in the open near the Sandy Lane area in Matlock. This involves 150x50m of scrub and woodland. Crews are using hose reel jets, beaters and water backpacks to extinguish the fire. Be advised that there is smoke in the area.”
